COLLECTORS TALK
Meet The Author: HUGH MOSS
Author, artist extraordinaire, and collector with rich experience in Chinese and Japanese art dealing, Hugh Moss has been living in Hong Kong since 1975. He writes extensive articles, books, and lectures on Chinese snuff bottles, other aspects of Chinese art, including late Qing and modern paintings. His publications, to name a few, include
The Art of Understanding Art - A New Perspective (2015), This Snuff Bottle Monkey Business(2012), and the FranzArt Collection series with Hedda Franz, Stuart Sargent, and Peter Suart. His latest book, Beyond the Stage of Time: The Master of the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat, celebrates his extraordinary life and career - published by Rasti Art (2020).
“After many books about snuff bottles dealing with the history, or the different types of snuff bottles, Stuart Sargent and I were invited to write a different sort of book about the Mullin Collection. Formed in the mid-twentieth century, Russel Mullin was one of a now-legendary group of Californians, and other American collectors, who were all in touch with each other, and enjoyed the focus of Lilla Perry who was writing the first major western book on the subject. We decided to take advantage of the wealth of correspondence we had access to in order to build a picture of this exciting time in snuff-bottle collecting history, and focus on the story of the Mullin collection, as much as on the bottles in it.”
