Held every year at the Royal Hospital Chelsea since its launch at 2010, the unmissable Masterpiece London comes to its eighth edition. This year, the international leading event continues to emphasise cross-collecting. Contemporary and traditional art, antiquities, design, and jewellery from more than 150 leading galleries and dealers worldwide are available for appreciation and purchase.
Artwork Highlights
This year's Masterpiece London debuts Masterpiece Presents, a new feature to the fair dedicated to large-scale installation. At the Fair’s entrance this year is an immersive installation by Chilean artist Iván Navarro. Titled Impenetrable Room, the astonishing artwork with neon colors definitely amps up the fair’s contemporary angle.
Some of the ancient work in this fair spans thousand of years. Breath-taking antique includes the white 106-centimeter marble sculpture Monumental sculpture of a Togatus created in Roman Empire in around late 1st to early 2nd century A.D. showcased by Axel Vervoordt, and a large Egyptian alabaster piriform vessel from 2972-2647 B.C. by exhibitor Robin Katz Fine Art.
Highlights of contemporary work include the 1981 Jean-Michel Basquiat oil-stick work on paper at Belgium’s Samuel van Hoegaarden Gallery and the exquisite watercolor by André Derain titled Les trois Grâces (1906) available at the booth of Stoppenbach & Delestre.
Educational Programmes at Masterpiece Fair
From art-handling workshops to talks and seminars, the fair offers a range of educational programmes.
The free Slow Art Workshops are not talks or master classes for experts, but environments in which anyone can engage with objects first hand, look, think and ask questions. The theme varies everyday covering various forms of art, for example, Chinese scholar’s rock (29 June), rustic pottery and court porcelain (1 July) and Cabinet of Curiosities (5 July).
The professional and exceptional talks will suit those who would like to probe deep into art the most. There are informal stand talks by Masterpiece exhibitors and partners and Highlights Tours by academics from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. You can join the extensive ones that includes day course, talks and panel discussions by internationally renowned professions as well.
