In a concrete jungle like Hong Kong, trees are a veritable element that vitalize the land. Their significance is integral to biodiversity, no matter within the city or countryside.
From the 6th of July to 8th of September, Asia Society presents the “Hidden Forests Summer Project”. As a response to serious trees destruction by the 2018 tropical cyclone Mangkhut in Hong Hong, the project aims to raise awareness for environmental protection. A host of summer artistic, family-friendly programs and events are planned, consisting of an art exhibition, a music series, community workshops and nature tours.
The exhibition “To See the Forest and the Trees” is a highlight amongst all events. Referring to the expression “cannot see the forest for the trees”, its title ironically conveys the opposite meaning. Instead of failing to see the big picture by only focusing on one viewpoint, the exhibition urges audiences to see and experience nature holistically. The artworks are curated to engage all five senses. Artists represented come from Hong Kong and overseas, including Allora & Calzadilla, Sally Bunker, South Ho, Vvzela Kook, Post Tree Lifestyle, James Prosek, Frank Tang, Natee Utarit, Haley van Oosten and Trevor Yeung. In addition to art in the gallery, there will be an Ode to Trees music series curated by Project 21st (founded by Hong Kong based composer Charles Kwong and Sharon Chan). It illustrates the significance of trees in enriching our environment and protecting Hong Kong’s environmental well-being to obtain a sustainable future.
Bringing together the talents of ecologists and artists, “To See the Forest and the Trees” will bring audiences to experience a whole new tropical summer adventure. Get ready to be inspired again by reviewing the forestry in Hong Kong!
